The Fort Chipewyan Boxing Tournament 1961 was in the old Community Hall. Here in the back row are Lloyd Flett, Brault Kelpin, Clifford Loutit, Pete (Petesy) Ladouceur, and Johnny Stewart. Front row are Glenn Coates, Hubby (Freddy) Fraser and Lindsay Mercredi. The trophies were by weight class, and Clifford and I somehow fought in two classes - Jr. Heavyweight and Jr. Light Heavyweight. We were the same weight, but I was taller and he had more muscle. I won the Jr. Heavyweight fight through careful defensive boxing. The last fight of the night was between Clifford and me, for the Jr. Light Heavyweight. Clifford came out of his corner full on, intent on winning. He was wild, but strong and fast, and in the second or third round he landed a solid hit to the side of my head, and I went down with that horrible nauseous feeling. The ref called it a TKO, and the fight was over. Clifford had clearly won - I didn't see the blow coming and he nailed me good. It was my last fight. Without glasses I couldn't see well enough, so dropped out of the club and missed the Yellowknife tournament. Petesy went though, and did well. Although he is only 8 months older than me (exactly), he was in a heavier class. He sparred with his older brother Tommy, and was fearless, fast, smart and strong. Pete went on to a very successful boxing career, including coaching for Champion Gym. If we were the same weight class I wouldn't have won this trophy, which I still have!
